The Portal

On Sunday June 8th, I walked through a mountain. Specifically, the 2.5mi tunnel through Alaska's Mt. Maynard that leads to a small town at the back of a deep fjord. The tunnel was originally conceived and built in the early 1940's for rail, but was modernized in 2000 to also allow road traffic. Recently the tunnel has been closed to traffic for one afternoon per summer to allow people to hike it's length and see it at a slower pace. My photoseries for the next few days will focus on this walk.

Whittier townpeople meet to welcome us as we emerge from the tunnel. It's not unusual for the weather to be totally different on this side of the pass. Today the whittier side was sunny and beautiful.
